What this guide rests on

Figures were verified on 2026-10-25 from Migrationsverket and universityadmissions.se. Amounts change yearly; check migrationsverket.se/en before you apply. The decision rests with Migrationsverket and no route guarantees a permit.

Application steps

  • Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries studying longer than three months need a residence permit for studies.
  • Be admitted to a full-time on-site programme and pay the first tuition instalment; admission stays conditional until payment.
  • Apply in the Migrationsverket e-service (valid email, Visa/Mastercard, scanned documents) or on paper form 113011 at a Swedish mission.
  • Show your passport digitally or in person; an embassy appointment may be required.
  • The decision arrives by email; the permit should be issued before you travel.

Proof of funds: verified amounts

  • SEK 10,656 per month for 2026 applications. It is reduced by SEK 2,960 if food and SEK 4,736 if housing is provided free by the institution; add SEK 4,440 per spouse and SEK 2,664 per child.
  • Locked funds that are frozen during the permit period do not count.
  • University estimates: LiU about SEK 10,000 per month; Lund example budget SEK 4,000-8,000 accommodation, 3,000 food, 1,500 miscellaneous.
  • Permit fee SEK 1,500 for adults and SEK 750 for children under 18; not refunded if rejected.
  • Processing: 75% of recently decided cases took up to 3 months; no exact time is given.
  • Health insurance: comprehensive cover is required if studies last under one year; for one year or more, population-register rules apply (Skatteverket rules were not fetched, so confirm on the official page).

Tuition

  • Non-EU/EEA/Swiss students pay tuition set by each university. Application fee SEK 900. Doctoral and exchange students pay no fees.
  • Sample autumn 2027 master's totals: Lund Information Systems (1 year) SEK 150,000; Uppsala Economics 228,000; Gothenburg Computer Science 294,000; Lund Economics 300,000; Linköping Computer Science 332,000; KI 330,000-400,000; KTH most 2-year programmes 385,000; Chalmers 380,000 (from 2027/28).
  • These are programme totals, not annual figures, and only a sample, not the whole sector.

Study progress is required: 37.5 credits in year 1 and 45 per year after. Earlier permits are not subject to the limit until extension.
