Do international students need a visa to study in Ukraine?

Nationals of countries with a visa entry procedure need a D-13 student visa issued on the basis of the university's electronic invitation. Visa-free nationals can enter for up to 90 days in 180 but must still obtain a temporary residence permit for study. Check the exemption list for your nationality with the Ukrainian embassy.

How do I get the study invitation?

Register at apply.studyinukraine.gov.ua, submit the application with passport, legalised education document and photo, and pay the 3,100 UAH fee. After the university approves and you accept the offer, you download the electronic invitation. This is the only way to obtain a study invitation in Ukraine according to university pages.

How much does it cost to study?

State universities publish fees in USD charged in UAH. Verified examples: Kyiv Polytechnic English-track bachelor's 2,300-3,000 USD per year; Lviv Polytechnic 2,000 (bachelor's) and 2,300 (master's); Bogomolets English-form medicine 3,500-4,700; Vinnytsia English medicine 3,000. There is no single national price.

Can I study in English?

Yes, in selected programmes: medicine, dentistry and pharmacy (Bogomolets, Vinnytsia), IT and engineering (Kyiv Polytechnic, Lviv Polytechnic), selected master's programmes (Odesa, Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv). Most other programmes are in Ukrainian, with preparatory-department language courses.

Is it safe to study in Ukraine now?

Martial law is in force throughout Ukraine. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to most regions and against all but essential travel to western regions including Lviv; the US advisory is Level 4. Air-raid alerts and power cuts occur. Read the current official advice and choose a university and city with this in mind.

Do I need health insurance?

Yes. A health insurance policy valid for the whole residence-permit period is a document required for the temporary residence permit; MES Order No. 562 of 24 May 2021 sets requirements per KNU.

Can Russian or Belarusian citizens enrol?

Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Iran and North Korea without a permanent residence permit in Ukraine need an individual permit from the Ministry of Education and Science (Odesa); Ivan Franko names Russia and Belarus.

Is there a Ukrainian state scholarship?

The Ministry of Education and Science offers state scholarships to citizens of countries with education agreements; candidates are nominated by their government (proposals by 31 March) and study in Ukrainian after a preparatory year. Individuals generally cannot apply directly.

Ukraine is a large higher-education system with many state universities that admit fee-paying international students, mainly in Ukrainian and, for selected programmes, English. Admission for foreigners runs through a single national electronic system (apply.studyinukraine.gov.ua), which issues an electronic study invitation used for a D-type student visa where required.
