How to write a motivation letter

A strong motivation letter explains why this programme, why this university and how it fits your goals, with concrete examples.

5 min read · Updated: 2026-10-23

Structure

  • Opening: who you are and why you apply (one short paragraph)
  • Academic background: relevant courses, projects, research
  • Experience: internships, work, volunteering and their link to the programme
  • Why this programme and university: curriculum, labs, faculty, city
  • Future goal: your plan after graduation

Good examples are concrete

Instead of "I am passionate about technology", write which project you built, which problem you solved and what you learned. Numbers and results add credibility.

What to avoid

  • Sending the same text to every university
  • Clichéd openings and exaggerated claims
  • Writing without knowing what the programme really contains
  • Spelling and language errors
  • Exceeding the length limit

Checklist

  • At least two concrete references specific to the programme and university?
  • Does each paragraph carry one idea?
  • Has someone else read it?
  • Does it follow the length and format rules the university gives?
