Scholarship application routes: direct application or nomination?

Not every scholarship works the same way. Misunderstanding the route can make even a strong candidate miss the process.

Three basic routes

  • Direct application: you apply on the provider's portal yourself (for example many government scholarship programmes).
  • Application by nomination: the relevant ministry or institution in your country selects and sends candidates; individual applications may not be possible.
  • Via the university: you are assessed for a scholarship together with your admission application, automatically or with a separate form.

What to look at

  • The application route and the official application page
  • Age, grade, nationality and level criteria
  • The application window (including the year)
  • What the scholarship covers (tuition, monthly stipend, housing, insurance)
  • Commitments (for example an obligation to return home after graduation)

A warning

Official scholarship applications are usually free. Be careful with intermediaries that charge for an application and always verify the official page. No consultancy can guarantee you will win a scholarship.
