Check the requirement first
The official page of the university and programme lists accepted tests, the minimum score and how long a result stays valid. Some universities also accept alternatives such as the Duolingo English Test; others do not.
Differences
- Format: the IELTS speaking section is a face-to-face interview; in TOEFL iBT speaking is recorded on a computer.
- Scoring: IELTS uses band scores 0–9, TOEFL iBT a 0–120 scale.
- Question types: question types and time management differ; take a mock of each to see which suits you.
- Validity: results are usually valid for two years; plan so they cover your application and visa dates.
The visa may have a separate requirement
In some countries such as the UK, visa applications accept only specific approved secure English tests. You may need a test that also covers the visa; verify on the official page.
How to decide
- List the tests your target programmes accept
- Take one mock test of each
- Compare results and test-date availability
