Study in Czechia: costs, visa, scholarships and universities

Costs, visa process, work rights, scholarships and university options for studying in Czechia.

Overview

Czechia has a large public higher-education sector in which tuition depends on the language of instruction. Per the official Study in Czechia portal, Czech-taught programmes at public and state universities are tuition-free regardless of nationality, but they usually require proof of Czech (often at least B2) and applicants still pay an application fee. English-taught programmes normally charge tuition set by each university or faculty: the portal says most cost 0-6,000 EUR per year, while medicine, arts and some specialised fields cost 8,000-25,000 EUR. Private universities set their own fees; one Prague private university lists roughly 299,000-311,000 CZK per year for international bachelor's students in 2026/27.

Non-EU students stay more than 90 days on a long-term visa (maximum one year) or a long-term residence permit for study. Applications are lodged at a Czech embassy or consulate, the legal processing time is 60 days, and the consular fee listed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is CZK 2,500. The study purpose is limited to accredited university programmes and certain other listed study types. Applicants must show accommodation, funds (the Ministry of the Interior formula is 15 times the existence minimum for the first month plus twice that amount for each further month) and comprehensive medical insurance; insurance guidance on university pages cites a EUR 400,000 minimum limit. Nationality matters in practice: Russian and Belarusian citizens face a government restriction on visa services with narrow exceptions, while Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Ukraine appear on the Student Facilitation (Rezim Student) country list as of 1 January 2024.

Full-time non-EU students at accredited Czech universities do not need a separate work permit according to the official portal, although their stay purpose is study and employers must report the employment. Official student budget guidance is around 500-800 EUR per month, with dormitory rooms listed at 160-450 EUR per month depending on room type. After graduating, non-EU students may apply for a residence permit of up to 9 months to look for work or prepare a business. Previous foreign education generally must be recognised (nostrification) or verified within the university admission procedure; public universities charge CZK 3,000 and have a legal decision period of 30 days.

The Czech Government Scholarship for developing countries covers tuition and a monthly stipend for selected English-taught follow-up master's and doctoral programmes (16,000 and 24,960 CZK per month), but its 2027/28 country list (13 countries plus Belarus democratic forces) does not include Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan or Azerbaijan, and the call closed on 30 September 2026. Most universities start in September; some Masaryk University faculties also admit in February. Deadlines, fees and English-test thresholds differ by faculty and change yearly, and several pages checked still showed the 2026/27 cycle, so applicants should confirm programme-level data on the university page before applying.

Public university tuition
Czech-taught programmes at public and state universities are tuition-free regardless of nationality; application fees usually apply, and extra fees may apply if the standard study length is exceeded. English (or other foreign-language) programmes charge tuition set by each university/faculty. Official portal: most cost 0-6,000 EUR/year; medicine, arts and some specialised fields 8,000-25,000 EUR/year. Charles University states EUR 40 to EUR 30,620 per year for foreign-language programmes (CORRECTS first pass, which reported EUR 0-14,000). Verified examples: Palacky General Medicine EUR 12,500; Charles 1st Faculty of Medicine General Medicine EUR 24,250; Masaryk General Medicine CZK 380,000; BUT 3,000-4,500 EUR (non-EU) in listed engineering programmes; UCT Prague CZK 84,500 (chemistry) / CZK 110,000 (economics); VSE EUR 6,000; CZU EUR 1,000-4,400.

Visa processing time
Legal time 60 days for study applications (Ministry of the Interior decides; embassy cannot speed it up). Charles University advises contacting the diplomatic mission about six months before arrival because appointments may take long; Charles also quotes short-term visa 15-45 days and long-term up to 60 days.
Source
Work rights
Full-time students from third countries at an accredited Czech university need no separate employment permit for a specific job, but the employer must still report the employment; the stay purpose remains study. No hour limit specific to non-EU students on the official portal; general student agreements: DPP up to 300 hours per calendar year per employer, DPC average up to 20 hours/week; minimum wage and written contract apply. Charles University: no legal hour limit, recommends about 20 hours/week for full-time students. Exchange or distance-study students can work without a permit only if under 26 and for max 7 consecutive days / 30 days per calendar year. Not verified against primary legislation (Act on Employment / Act on Residence of Foreigners).

Intakes and deadlines
Main intake September/October (winter semester); the summer semester starts in February and some programmes admit then (Masaryk: several faculties offer a February 2027 intake). Typical September-start deadlines fall between February and April, entrance exams in spring/early summer, results often by end of June/July (official portal); but medicine and some faculties run to July-September. Options: student dormitory (shared 160-330, single 250-450 EUR/month), room in shared flat (250-500), private flat (500-1,000). Dorm places are limited and arranged via the university; Prague and Brno are more expensive than Olomouc, Hradec Kralove or Liberec. Proof of accommodation is required for the visa. Examples: Charles first-year students have a dorm place pre-reserved by faculty; CTU dorm reservation deposit 5,000 CZK (CTU SFA page); UCT Prague administrative fee 400 CZK and refundable deposit 7,000 CZK; VSE says guaranteed university accommodation for international students and almost 4,000 beds outside Prague residents.

Visa and residence permit

Non-EU students staying over 90 days need a long-term visa for study (valid up to one year) or a long-term residence permit for study, lodged at the Czech embassy/consulate, with the Ministry of the Interior deciding. Study purpose covers university studies in accredited programmes and certain other listed study types (e.g. preparatory language courses by public universities, listed stipend programmes); unaccredited programmes, language courses and secondary schooling are excluded (Ukraine notice). Documents (MFA): application form, passport, 2 photos, biometrics, proof of purpose (usually acceptance letter), proof of accommodation, proof of funds, criminal record extract for applicants over 15, parental consent for minors, fee; documents no older than 180 days (except passport/photo), in Czech or officially translated, foreign public documents apostilled/superlegalised. Travel medical insurance must be shown at collection. After approval the applicant gets a single-entry visa valid 60 days to collect the residence card from the Ministry of the Interior (biometrics); extension is requested in Czechia before the card expires. Registration with Foreign Police within 3 working days of arrival unless accommodation provider registers. Fee: CZK 2,500 for long-term visa and residence permit (students waived only for Taiwan citizens for long-term visa). Legal processing time: 60 days.

Proof of funds
Ministry of the Interior formula (archived page, existence minimum CZK 3,130/month in force from 1 Jan 2023 under Government Regulation 436/2022): 15 x 3,130 CZK for the first month + 2 x 3,130 CZK for each further month, e.g. CZK 78,250 for a Sept-Feb semester and CZK 115,810 for a Sept-Aug year; half for applicants under 18. Accepted proof: bank statement (freely usable in Czechia), international payment card, or pledge/proof that the school or a public body covers costs (pledge for one month's minimum + proof of the difference up to 6x minimum), grant under international agreement. The 2026 figure was NOT found published; the 3,130 figure comes from an archived page and an embassy page undated, so confirm with the embassy.

Health insurance
Non-EU students staying over 90 days need comprehensive medical insurance for the whole stay (proof before visa issue). Universities cite EUR 400,000 minimum per claim; providers named by CTU: VZP, Maxima, Slavia. Public insurance or an international agreement exempts from travel insurance; Government scholarship holders are insured by the Ministry of Health. Whether non-EU students can join public insurance was not explained on the portal.

Nationality-specific notes: turkish: Citizens of Turkiye can lodge long-term student visa/permit applications at the Embassy in Ankara or the Consulate General in Istanbul under the Student Facilitation Programme (Turkey is on the 1 Jan 2024 country list). Ankara requires appointment registration by email (ankara.visa@mzv.gov.cz on the text; a link shows visa_ankara@mzv.cz - confirm), subject naming one purpose, PDF attachments (passport data page, admission letter, Turkish residence-address document), one applicant per email. Sources: Ankara and Istanbul MFA pages.; russian: Czech MFA states restricted visa services for Russian and Belarusian citizens (Government Decree 200 as amended, Act 175/2022); published 28 Aug 2023, last updated 9 Feb 2026. Limited exceptions listed: certain family members, certain Belarusian students, regime opponents. No general exception for Russian students was found; Russia is not on the Student Facilitation list. Since 3 July 2024 only Russian biometric passports are recognised. CZU (FTA) and UCT Prague pages state Russian/Belarusian applicants are not accepted or that admission does not guarantee a visa. Detailed Czech-language list of permitted services was not read.; kazakh: Kazakhstan is on the Student Facilitation list. Embassy Astana page (published 16 Apr 2026, updated 28 Jul 2026): the Czech school, not the applicant, requests the appointment by emailing astana.student@mzv.gov.cz with the enrolment document; registration method changed 20 Jan 2025; average wait 21-30 days; Regime Student quota stated as 30 places per month for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan combined.; ukrainian: Ukraine is on the Student Facilitation list. Study long-term visas are accepted at the Embassy in Kyiv and Consulate General in Lviv for accredited university programmes or listed stipends (MFA notice published 22 Mar 2024, updated 9 Feb 2026). Many Ukrainians remain on temporary protection; Palacky University's page says students holding a valid study visa/permit should extend it rather than rely on temporary protection, and notes temporary protection extension to 31 Mar 2027 (university page, not primary law).; azerbaijani: Azerbaijan is on the Student Facilitation list. Embassy Baku: appointments for long-term visas/permits registered by email (baku.visa@mzv.gov.cz in text, visa_baku@mzv.cz in link - confirm), in English, Russian or Czech, one applicant per email, with passport data page and document showing purpose of stay; applications accepted Mondays and Tuesdays.
