Foreigners come to study on a type D (D-13, educational programs) long-stay visa issued by a Ukrainian consulate on the basis of an electronic invitation from the university, unless their nationality is visa-exempt. After arrival, a temporary residence permit (which also serves as ID) is mandatory for stays over 90 days and for study; visa-free students also must apply for it.
Wartime safety and study conditions
Martial law is in force throughout Ukraine (UK FCDO). Power cuts can disable ATMs and card terminals; street crime and card cloning are reported; unexploded ordnance is a risk especially in the south and east. FCDO advises against all travel to Crimea, eastern Ukraine and territory under Russian control, and within 50 km of the Belarus border in Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr; against all but essential travel to Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr; the page structure puts remaining regions under the stricter advice (city-level status of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro not stated). US advisory is Level 4 (via search summary; page returned 403).
