Switzerland: Work and stay

Working while studying in Switzerland and staying after graduation.

Work rights and after graduation

Third-country students may work at most 15 hours per week outside holidays, beginning no sooner than six months after the course starts; the cantonal authority approves (Art. 38 ASEO), the employer files the application and the university must confirm the work fits the studies. After graduating from a Swiss higher education institution, third-country nationals have six months from the end of the course to look for a job matching their qualifications.

After graduation: Six-month residence permit to look for work after graduation, with funds, accommodation and diploma; later work only in shortage sectors with high academic/economic interest.

What to watch for in Work and stay

  • Work limits depend on the type of student residence permit; verify the official rule.
  • Do not plan for work rights to cover all living costs.
  • Post-study stay options depend on conditions; research them early.
