Algeria: Visa

Student visa and residence permit steps, timing and proof of funds for Algeria.

Visa and residence permit

Foreigners who are not visa-exempt must obtain a visa before travel from the Algerian embassy or consulate of their usual place of residence (Algerian MFA). A study visa is justified by a certificate of registration at a public or private institution approved by the Algerian state, plus either a scholarship certificate (Algerian or home-country authorities) or proof of means to pay for studies and stay. Visa validity options are 90 days, 180 days, one year and two years; stay per entry is capped at 90 days ; the Study in Algeria portal says tuition payment may follow visa issue. After arrival, residence is regularised with a foreigner's resident card at the local police services.

Visa processing time
No official processing time found for study visas (only 48 hours for organised tourist-agency groups).Source
Proof of funds
Required in principle ('proof of the means to pay for studies and stay') but no amount is published in official pages found.Source
Health insurance
Students have access to health care at institutions and university residences (general practitioners, dentists, nurses). Travel insurance with repatriation cover is part of the visa file. No official statement on mandatory student health insurance was found.Source

Application steps

  1. Create an account and apply on the Study in Algeria platform (studyinalgeria.dz) in the application window; MESRS reviews documents and the chosen university reviews academic fit and seat availability.
  2. MESRS authenticates diplomas and issues an equivalence certificate and a grade-equivalence document (Equivalence Department).
  3. After admission, pay tuition by bank transfer to the host university (may follow visa issue) and upload the receipt in the portal.
  4. Apply for the study visa at the Algerian embassy/consulate of your place of residence with the registration certificate and proof of funds; non-citizens of the host country add their residence card.
  5. Enter Algeria, complete administrative and pedagogical registration at the university (September) and start classes (October).
  6. Apply for the foreigner's resident card at the competent police services 15 days before the visa expires, with a university registration/school certificate (see documents).
