Russia: Work and stay

Working while studying in Russia and staying after graduation.

Work rights and after graduation

Full-time students at state-accredited vocational or higher-education programmes can work in free time without a patent or work permit; employers need no permission to employ foreign workers; only a university certificate of study is required (Federal Law 115-FZ as amended by 16-FZ of 6 Feb 2020). Work must stop when studies end or stop.

After graduation: The RVPO runs for the study period plus 180 days, during which the holder may apply for a residence permit without leaving Russia, and may apply for permanent residence within three years after studies without a temporary permit (UrFU summary of Article 6.2 of the law on foreign citizens).

What to watch for in Work and stay

  • Work limits depend on the type of student residence permit; verify the official rule.
  • Do not plan for work rights to cover all living costs.
  • Post-study stay options depend on conditions; research them early.
