Belgium: Work and stay

Working while studying in Belgium and staying after graduation.

Work rights and after graduation

Foreign students with a valid residence permit may work without separate work permit: unlimited hours during holidays, up to 20 hours per week during the school year; more than 20 hours may jeopardise permit renewal.

After graduation: 12-month orientation-year residence permit to seek work or start a business.

What to watch for in Work and stay

  • Work limits depend on the type of student residence permit; verify the official rule.
  • Do not plan for work rights to cover all living costs.
  • Post-study stay options depend on conditions; research them early.
